✦ The bottom line
Reddit's two biggest risks are dependencies on others. First, a meaningful share of its traffic arrives through search engines — so a change to Google's ranking, or Google answering questions itself with AI, can move Reddit's audience. Second, a majority of its revenue is advertising — so an ad-spending downturn hits most of the business at once.

The first dependency: search traffic
A large share of Reddit's visitors arrive by searching Google and landing on a Reddit thread. Reddit's own risk factors flag a reliance on search engines' methodologies — search-engine-optimization practices and policies it doesn't control.
That makes Google's algorithm a silent partner in Reddit's growth. A ranking change, a policy shift, or Google increasingly answering questions directly with AI could divert traffic away from Reddit — without Reddit doing anything wrong.
Wall Street calls this
Search-referral dependency
When a big chunk of your audience comes from someone else's platform, that platform holds a lever over your growth. For Reddit, that lever is search — and it belongs to Google, a company that is also a competitor for ad dollars.
Revenue from advertising · fiscal year 2025
Reddit generates a majority of its revenue from advertising (the company's own words). The young data-licensing business is growing but still smaller — so for now, an ad-market downturn would hit most of the top line.

From the 10-K · the advertising concentration, in Reddit's own words
We generate a majority of our revenue from advertising. The failure to attract new advertisers, the loss of advertisers, or the reduction of or failure by advertisers to maintain or increase their advertising budgets would adversely affect our business.
↳ Advertising is the first spending companies cut in a downturn. Because it's a majority of Reddit's revenue, a weak ad market would hit Reddit harder than a more diversified company. The AI-data business may diversify this over time — but it isn't there yet.
