When the loss is mostly accounting
Hut 8 mines bitcoin and holds a lot of it. When the bitcoin price falls, accounting rules now require it to record an unrealized loss — even though it hasn't sold a coin. That paper loss flows straight into net income, making it look much worse than the underlying business actually did.
