Founder of ASIC
mining, now pushing
energy-integrated
compute.
Canaan was first to ship ASIC miners (2013). The pitch now: own the energy stack underneath the hashboards.

✦ The bottom line
Canaan's original moat was ASIC design — its 2013 Avalon miners were the first commercial ASIC bitcoin mining machines, and the team still designs new generations annually. The new moat is integration with energy infrastructure: West Texas joint ventures, a Canadian gas-to-compute project, and partnerships like Tether's immersion-cooled modular mining.

Why ASIC mining is its own industry
ASIC stands for Application-Specific Integrated Circuit — a chip designed to do one task extremely efficiently. ASIC bitcoin miners do nothing but hash bitcoin blocks. That single-purpose specialization makes them thousands of times more efficient than general-purpose computers, but it also means the entire industry rebuilds every few years as new chip generations arrive. Bitmain (private, China) is the dominant player; Canaan is among a few global #2-#5 challengers.
Wall Street calls this
Mining chip design
Each new chip generation can shift market share dramatically. Canaan's ability to keep producing competitive Avalon chips is the core of its sales business.

15.79 EH/s of installed mining capacity globally (10.97 non-JV + 4.82 JV) — up 34.6% YoY on the non-JV side, with fleet efficiency improving from 27.4 J/TH to 23.6 J/TH.

What's new about the moat is the energy integration strategy. Canaan now operates 13 mining projects across 5 countries — 5 in the Americas (including 49% of the West Texas ABC Projects acquired from Cipher Mining), 2 in Ethiopia, 1 in Canada (gas-to-compute), 1 in the Middle East, 1 in Malaysia. The geographical spread isn't an accident.

The strategy, in management's words
With our Canada 'gas-to-compute' project coming online, we are advancing our position within the broader energy ecosystem. Looking ahead, we see our role evolving beyond traditional mining toward a vertically integrated energy infrastructure platform.
↳ The bet: become a power company that mines bitcoin, not just a mining company that buys power. The Canada gas-to-compute project is the first test of that thesis.
