Ch 1 · Selling Shovels in a Gold Rush
Chapter 1 · Growth
Not an AI company. It sells AI its plumbing.
Every AI data center needs optical transceivers to move data. Applied Optoelectronics makes them.

✦ The bottom line
Applied Optoelectronics sold $456M in 2025, and the most recent quarter grew ~51% year-over-year. The driver: AI data centers need enormous numbers of optical transceivers — the devices that shuttle data between servers and chips at light speed — and AAOI makes them. It's a 'picks and shovels' play on the AI buildout.

The 'picks and shovels' idea
In a gold rush, the people who reliably made money weren't the prospectors — they were the ones selling picks, shovels, and jeans. Investing in infrastructure suppliers instead of betting on which AI company wins is the modern version. AAOI sells optical transceivers — pluggable modules that convert electrical signals to light and back, so data can race through fiber between machines. As AI data centers multiply and get faster (400G, 800G and beyond), they need more and faster transceivers.

Revenue / picks-and-shovels
A supplier can grow with the whole industry instead of one winner — but it's also exposed to the industry's *cycles* and to the *power* of a few huge buyers, which is the rest of this story.

Riding the buildout
Real, fast growth selling essential gear into the AI data-center boom. The catch (next chapters): thin profits, fierce rivals, and a few enormous customers.
