Real cash left over
The cash a company has left after running everything and paying for its buildings and equipment. Money it can save, return to owners, or reinvest. We use cash here on purpose: this quarter Alphabet's reported profit was inflated by paper gains on its investments. Cash doesn't lie the way profit can.
Wall Street calls this
Free cash flow
Alphabet's cash engine is huge — but its building spree just exploded, which changes how much is actually *left*.
Operating cash generated · latest quarter
$45.8
B
Cash thrown off by the business in three months. This figure strips out the paper investment gains that flattered reported profit — it's the real engine.

$45.8 billion of cash in a quarter is a torrent. For most of Alphabet's life almost all of it became free cash — software is cheap to run. AI is not. It takes vast data centers full of expensive chips, and Alphabet is building them as fast as it can. So how much of the cash is now going into concrete and silicon?
Spending on data centers & equipment · latest quarter
$35.7
B
Spent on property and equipment in three months — more than double the $17.2B a year ago. Almost all of it is AI infrastructure.

Doubling the build leaves less free cash than before. Subtract the $35.7B of spending from the $45.8B of operating cash, and the leftover — the free cash — is much thinner than Alphabet is used to. It's still positive, and the company still sits on net cash and just raised its dividend. But the trend is clear: the AI build is eating the surplus.
Free cash, after the build · latest quarter
$10.1
B
Free cash left after the record build — down sharply as capex doubled. Still positive, still net cash, dividend raised 5%. But the cushion is shrinking.

Still free-cash-positive and net cash after doubling the AI build.
